Most Londoners live in flats
More than half of London homes are flats, from new-build blocks with a concierge to top-floor conversions with a steep staircase. That makes flat moves the most common job for London removal companies, and the details that matter most are the floor, the lift and the parking.
Tell movers these four things
- Which floor, at both ends. A third-floor walk-up takes much longer than a ground-floor flat.
- Is there a lift, and what size? Small lifts in older blocks often will not take a sofa or a wardrobe.
- Where can the van stop? Is there a loading bay, a car park or a controlled parking zone?
- Building rules. New-build blocks often need you to book the goods lift or loading bay and may ask for the mover's insurance certificate.

Renting? Time the move with your tenancy
Most London tenancies end on the last day of the month, so the last few days are the busiest for movers. If you can overlap your old and new tenancy by a day or two, you can move midweek for less. Leave time to clean before the check-out inspection. Our deposit guide explains what landlords look for.
Flats with stairs or no lift
Movers price stairs because they slow everything down. Ask for two movers rather than one if you are above the first floor, and take apart beds and tables the night before. Read moving out of a flat with stairs or no lift.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to move a 1-bed flat in London?
Usually £250 to £500 for a local move, depending on stairs, parking and how much you have.
Will movers take furniture up the stairs?
Yes, that is part of the job, but tell them how many floors there are. Very large items may need to be taken apart first.
Do new-build blocks need anything special?
Often you must book the goods lift or loading bay with the concierge, and some buildings ask for the mover's insurance certificate in advance.
Is a man and van enough for a flat?
For a studio or 1-bed, usually yes. For a 2-bed or bigger, or lots of stairs, two or three movers are faster.
