Do not pay to move what you will throw away
Every item you move adds time and cost. If your old sofa, bed or wardrobe is not coming to your new home, arrange for it to go before or on moving day. Many removal companies can take unwanted furniture away at the same time as your move. Tick "Sofa or furniture disposal" when you ask for quotes.
Your options
| Option | Good for | Things to know |
|---|---|---|
| Sell or give away | Furniture in good condition | Online marketplaces and local groups. Buyers usually collect. |
| Charity collection | Good-quality furniture | Upholstered furniture must have its fire safety label, or charities usually cannot take it. |
| Council bulky waste collection | A few large items | Most councils collect for a fee. Book ahead, as dates can be weeks away. |
| Removal or clearance company | Several items, or on moving day | Must be a registered waste carrier. Can be booked with your move. |
| Household recycling centre | If you have a vehicle | Check your council's rules and booking system. |
Sofas and armchairs need special disposal
Old sofas, armchairs and other upholstered seating can contain persistent chemicals in their foam and fabric, so in the UK they must not go to landfill or be recycled with other waste. Councils and licensed waste carriers send them for safe destruction. This is one reason sofa disposal often costs more than other furniture.
Check who takes your waste
You have a legal duty of care for your household waste. If you pay someone to take it and it is fly-tipped, you can be fined. Always use a registered waste carrier and check their registration on the Environment Agency public register (Natural Resources Wales or SEPA in Wales and Scotland). Be wary of very cheap offers on social media.

Frequently asked questions
How much does sofa disposal cost?
It depends on your council or the company, the size of the sofa and access. Council collections are usually cheapest; companies that collect on moving day are often most convenient.
Can a removal company take my old sofa?
Many can, as long as they are registered waste carriers. Ask when you compare quotes.
Can I leave furniture outside for collection?
Only if the council or carrier has booked a collection for that day. Leaving it out otherwise can count as fly-tipping.
