Why declutter first
Removal quotes are based on volume. Every box and piece of furniture you do not move lowers the cost, shortens packing and makes unpacking easier. Start 6 to 8 weeks before the move.
Four piles
- Keep: comes with you.
- Sell: furniture, electronics and good-quality items.
- Donate: clothes, books, toys and homeware in good condition.
- Recycle or dispose: broken, worn or unwanted items.
Room by room
- Loft and garage: start here. They hide the most and take the longest.
- Wardrobes: anything not worn in a year can usually go.
- Kitchen: duplicates, gadgets you never use and food you will not finish before the move.
- Books and papers: keep important documents together; shred old statements.
- Garden and shed: half-used paint, chemicals and gas bottles cannot go in the removal van, so use or dispose of them safely.
- Furniture: measure your new home. If it will not fit, sell or dispose of it now.
Getting rid of things
- Sell on online marketplaces or at a car boot sale.
- Donate to charity shops, or book a charity furniture collection.
- Book a council bulky waste collection or a furniture disposal service.
- For a big clear-out, book a house clearance.
